Potomac Homes offers a therapeutic, multi-faceted interdisciplinary approach to activities and social and leisure programming. Our goal is to provide specialized stimulation to create structure and support in meeting the physical, psychosocial, cognitive and spiritual needs of each resident.

All program components are designed to provide "failure-free" stimulation according to the cognitive ability of each resident. Our intimate environment of only 15 residents per home enables our staff to create individual programs for each resident. We focus on the resident's wellness and the holistic needs, rather than the losses that the disease causes. Our programming is designed to provide stimulation within each resident’s capabilities that is "failure-free" and success oriented.

Residents are assessed upon admission and periodically thereafter which combines social history with leisure interests and an activity interest inventory. This information is then matched to cognitive status and a leisure interest and social stimulation plan is developed individually for each resident. Programs are specifically designed to promote communication, which helps to maintain socialization skills, while improving self-esteem and dignity.

We recognize that many of our residents face serious difficulty in initiating and maintaining interest in daily activities. Our staff works to provide the structure and stimulation they need to minimize the losses of dementia. We offer a structured program based upon our comprehensive understanding of dementia with the flexibility to allow for independence and individuality.

Our specially trained activity staff person coordinates stimulating activities, while residents are offered choices in activities customized to each individual.
