One of the first priorities when a new resident moves in to a Potomac Home is to talk with the family about the likes and dislikes of their loved one with dementia. It’s important for us to understand their personality and individual needs and preferences right from the start to help them adjust to their new living arrangements.
The social and leisure activities programs are tailored to the activities, pastimes, and hobbies that the resident enjoyed prior to the Alzheimer’s diagnosis. We feel it’s important to meet the resident where they’re at to connect with them, and build a meaningful relationship.
Having the right balance of structure during the day for stimulating activities, while allowing for enough quiet time is essential in caring for people with Alzheimer’s.
Social, cognitive, physical and gross motor activities are included in daily activities. Some of the planned activities include:
• Exercise to music
• Garden walks
• Group exercise
• Bird watching
• Gardening
• Outside entertainment
• Special events and parties
• Discuss daily current events
• Reminiscence discussion groups
• Trivia
• Storytelling
• Poetry reading
• Bible or Spiritual reading
• Creative arts
• Memory games
• Music appreciation with sing-a-longs, music tapes and videos
• Afternoon tea social
• Projects and games (arts and crafts, painting, collage, bingo)
• Slide shows
• Nature videos
• Movies
• Arm chair travel
• Soothing music in the evening
Special events, parties and outside entertainers are often scheduled. We encourage families and friends to join in any of the activities and events, especially holiday parties. Although all residents are invited and encouraged to attend and participate in the activities, some may choose to just observe. We honor and respect the resident's choices.
